if anyone out there is as poor as i am here’s a tip for how to feed yourself:
any time steam-in-bag vegetables are on sale buy that shit.
it’s really difficult to eat when you don’t have money and it’s even harder not to eat absolute garbage because you have to sell your soul to…
this is what i’m talking about! I’m so down! Eating as best I can with what I got is one of my favorite hobbies! (And by hobby I mean something I’ve been forced to do and I value my own ingenuity and eff yeah I’m gonna celebrate that cause no one else will)
So, my credit isn’t awesome but it’s not horrible…and I’ve been googling all sorts of things, bad ideas and good ideas to try to figure out how I can stay in school and do all the things I want to do, and this site is pr helpful, more helpful than the suggestion to have a baby to qualify for government programs like WIC and TANF and be eligible for more scholarships. Which I haven’t ruled out yet.
a rising tide lifts all ships but wait why is my ship up here anyway?
I mass emailed my Anthro class in a panic because I missed one class and I feel like my study guide isn’t as good as the last two tests. I offered to trade study guides with anyone who had one, and I got a bunch of “I’ll take a copy of your study guide” responses and two that had gems like this:
"(ie. role of women in society-factors)- better suited for domestic due to the being smaller, shorter, and always pregnant and stuff"
"the Nuer- south sudan; a woman can marry another woman if her father has no male heirs (she acts as a man, to raise her fathers grandson, if you know what I mean)"
Like, I have it together! I have this one thing together, so well! And all the other stuff I have to do, like work and eating and taking care of myself…I’m doing relatively ok at that too so can I just please have a little more money or a few more hours in a day or a bigger loan or a scholarship please? I SWEAR it’ll pay off for everyone.
“It seems to be the human condition that in one degree or another we all suffer frustration and limitation, all encounter unwelcome barriers, and are all damaged and hurt in various ways. Since we are a social species, almost all of our behavior and activities are structured by more than individual inclination and the condition of the planet and its atmosphere. No human is free of social structures, nor (perhaps) would happiness consist in such freedom. Structure consists of boundaries, limits and barriers; in a structured whole, some motions and changes are possible, and others are not.
If one is looking for an excuse to dilute the word ‘oppression’, one can use the fact of social structure as an excuse and say that everyone is oppressed. But if one would rather get clear about what oppression is and is not, one needs to sort out the sufferings, harms and limitations and figure out which are elements of oppression and which are not.
From what I have already said here, it is clear that if one wants to determine whether a particular suffering, harm or limitation is part of someone’s being oppressed, one has to look at it in context in order to tell whether it is an element in an oppressive structure: one has to see if it is part of an enclosing structure of forces and barriers which tends to the immobilization and reduction of a group or category of people.
One has to look at how the barrier or force fits with others and to whose benefit or detriment it works. As soon as one looks at examples, it becomes obvious that not everything which frustrates or limits a person is oppressive, and not every harm or damage is due to or contributes to oppression.”—Marilyn Frye, “Oppression” (via socio-logic)
i know i’m supposed to give credence to statistical analysis but fuck if surveys aren’t just thing made up by humans who have been judged for some reason to have the right answers and use the correct criteria (your criteria is leading it’s racist it’s heteronormative it’s wrong you made a mistake you forgot something the standard is off your education puts you in a different place than what you’re studying)
just tell me your honest story and we’ll go from there.
